WWW Wednesday: Prisons, Glamour and Perspective

Here’s my WWW Wednesday hosted by Sam on Taking on a World of Words.

The Three Ws are:

  1. What are you currently reading?
  2. What did you recently finish reading?
  3. What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading: Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harris

I picked Sapiens because I saw it on a shelf during a Facetime call. Barack Obama called it ‘interesting and provocative’, he’s not wrong! This is very different to my normal books (I’ve been on a bit of an easy-read binge recently) so I’m taking this one slowly.

Recently Finished: A Bit Of A Stretch by Chris Atkins

I was a massive fan of Adam Kay’s writing and wanted a book similar to This Is Going To Hurt. A Bit Of A Stretch popped up on my Google search and I was not disappointed. A thought provoking book on the UK prison system and a non-fiction must read.

I’ve always been interested in aspects of social reform, mainly housing, poverty prevention and homelessness, so A Bit Of A Stretch was a great way to better understand the impact of a brutal system on the disadvantaged. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in ‘serving your time’, but I strongly believe that prisons should be places of rehabilitation and change, something that Atkins shows is not the case with 23 hour ‘bang-ups’ and a serious lack of mental health services.

Atkins writing is brutally honest and incredibly eye-opening.

Up Next: City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

  1. Sapiens has been on my TBR since Obama recommended it. Its size has daunted me so haven’t picked it up yet but may need to try it and take it slow as you recommend 🙂
